Accessibility

We are crafting our website for all of our visitors to enjoy. As we upload as much of our considerable archive as we can over the foreseeable future, we will be constantly refining its design to improve the user experience for everyone and we welcome any questions, suggestions or problems regarding its accessibility.

Re-sizable Text

If you find the text to be too big or too small. you can use your browser’s text settings or ‘zoom’ feature to display it at a size that is more comfortable for you to read.

Colour & Contrast

We have chosen the colours for this website to ensure strong visual contrast between any text and its background. All text on our published pages meet the WCAG Standard Level AA, and we use an approved colour contrast testing tool to check the contrast on all pages before publishing.

Image Descriptions

‘Alternative Text’ is a text description that appears when an image can’t be displayed, and it’s crucial for accessibility, especially for users with visual impairments who rely on screen readers. While not always legally required, it’s strongly recommended and is often included in accessibility guidelines and standards like WCAG.

Where an image is simply a background image for aesthetic purposes it is not a legal requirement to provide ‘Alternative Tex’ and we don’t as this would add unnecessary ‘noise’ for people using screen-readers.

We strive to provide an ‘Alternative Text’ (and where appropriate, a caption) for all images which are not background images and should you find an image without it, please let us know and we’ll fix it.

Video & Audio

All videos in all formats on our site are re-sizable, usually by clicking on the image and using the handles to make them bigger or smaller.

We aim to offer transcriptions of all the audio and video interviews presented on the site, so that people who are unable to see and hear to have access to the information. If you find any particular interviews which require additional transcription, you are welcome to contact us and we will try to make the transcripts available as soon as we can.

Page Content

Each page has its own title which gives a clear indication of the content of the page. Links to related pages can usually be found on the right side of each page.

Each page has breadcrumbs near the top of the page which clearly show whereabouts in the site you are and a clickable path back home. You can always click the logo at the top of each page to go direct to the Home page.

Sub-headings divide the page where necessary to make the content more manageable. One-click links along the top of each page takes you directly to that section on the page.

Navigating between pages

You should be able to reach all parts of our site using links that you can access using your keyboard. So, if you have restricted sight or mobility, you are able to use your keyboard tab key or switch device to move from link to link.

All links will open in a new window in your current browser unless specified, making it easy to move backwards and forwards through pages.

We make sure that all links are;

  • Easily identified
  • Clear: the links will clearly define where they link to
  • Distinct: each link is different
  • Self-explanatory: the links do not need further description
  • Short and to the point

3rd Party Technology

Our archive comprises of content in various formats, so our site includes third-party technology and features. These include:

  • Adobe PDF downloadable documents
  • Embedded links and content from Facebook and Twitter
  • Google Maps (third party map application)
  • YouTube (third party video application)

Whilst we may not be able to resolve any accessibility issues related specifically to third-party technology, if you let us know of any problems you’re having we will do what we can to help.
